Project
Objective
|
To stabilise the IT environment by replacing outdated hardware.
|
Project
Description
|
The University PABX (phone system) is 22 years old, lacks functionality, and support can no longer be guaranteed. It requires replacement. Modern day phone systems utilise a technology known as Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. VoIP essentially means that the computer network is used for phone calls rather than a separate phone cabling system. As VoIP shares cabling infrastructure with computer systems, it can also be integrated with traditional IT systems, for example, sending voice mail to email. This project will analyse if and how fully integrated VoIP functionality could be used at the University, then select and install an appropriate system.
|
Key Outputs |
- User requirements / design document
- Tender specification resulting in signed contract with selected vendor
- Installed VoIP system
- New switchboard, voice mail system and new handsets throughout the University
- Integration with other IT systems per the user requirements document
- Trained users
- Full technical documentation
- Ongoing support structure (which could be outsourced)
- Old PABX system, voice mail system and handsets decommissioned and appropriately discarded.

Project
Schedule |
The project is tentatively scheduled to commence in April 2008. Once the system is selected and installed, it will be rolled out building by building in the same sequence as project STAB06 Upgrade Building Infrastructure, due to VoIPs dependency in new cabling. For this reason, rollout will continue through to the end of 2009.
