Quick reference guide
This guide is for use with telephone extensions connected to the Macquarie University PABX system.
Making Internal Calls
To call another extension on the University Campus
- Lift the handset.
- You will hear the PABX dial tone.
- Key in the four digit extension number you wish to call.
- You will hear a ringing tone, engaged tone or you will be diverted to voicemail if activated.
- If you receive engaged tone either delay your call or see the Camp on facility.
Making External Calls
To call a number outside the University
- Lift the handset.
- You will hear the PABX dial tone.
- Dial0 followed by the external telephone number.
- You will not hear an external dial tone following the 0.
- You will hear a ringing tone or engaged tone.
Holding a call
You can place a caller on hold for up to 75 seconds, if for example, you wish to confer with a colleague without the caller overhearing,
- Ask the caller to hold
- Press the Recall button and you will hear PABX dial tone
- Key in *9 and you will hear an acceptance tone
- Replace the handset and the caller will hear music on hold
- To reconnect the call lift the handset and dial *1
- Otherwise after 75 seconds the call will ring on your extension
Transferring a Call
If you wish to transfer a caller on your extension to someone on another extension
- Tell the caller you are going to transfer them
- Press the Recall button and you will hear PABX dial tone
- Key in the extension number you want to transfer the call to
- When the extension answers tell them you are about to transfer a caller
- Replace your handset
If the extension is busy or does not answer you can reconnect to the caller by
- Press Recall *1 and you will be able to speak with the caller
Making an Enquiry Call
While you are involved in a telephone conversation you may need to call someone on another extension for some information. You can do this without disconnecting your original call.
- Ask the caller to hold on
- Press the Recall button and you will hear PABX dial tone
- Key in the extension number of the person you wish to consult
- When this extension answers make the enquiry
- To reconnect the original caller press Recall *1
Conference Calls
Conference calls may be established with up to six telephone users.
To establish a conference call
- Call the first party either internally or externally
- Ask the person to hold and press Recall
- Call the next party either internally or externally
- Ask the person to hold and press Recall *4. All three parties can now converse.
- To add more callers repeat the previous steps
Camp On
If you call a busy extension and get engaged tone you can get the PABX to call you when the extension is free.
- When you hear the engaged tone press Recall #1
- You will hear an acceptance tone
- Replace your handset
- When the other extension becomes free your telephone will ring
- When you pick up your handset the other extension will be called
- If you do not pickup within 15 seconds of the call back then the camp on will be cancelled
System Abbreviated Dial
The University has a number of three digit System Abbreviated numbers which are programmed by the system administrators. To call an abbreviated number, use the following procedure.
- Lift your handset and you will hear PABX dial tone
- Key in #6 followed by the three digit code
- After in slight delay you will be connected
Group Call Pick up
Your extension may be programmed into a call pick up group. This allows you to answer calls ringing at an extension in your group by keying in the following.
- You hear the telephone in your pick up group ringing
- Pick up your handset and you will hear PABX dial tone
- Press **3 and you will be connected to the caller
Call Pick up
You can pick up calls at a nearby extension even if you are not in the pick up group. But you must know the number of the extension that is ringing.
- You hear the telephone ringing
- Pick up your handset and you will hear PABX dial tone
- Press *3 followed by the ringing extensions four digit telephone number and you will be connected to the caller
Call Forwarding
Calls to your extension can be automatically forwarded immediately to another extension.
- Lift your handset and you will hear PABX dial tone
- Press #9 and the four digit extension number where you want the calls to go
- You will hear an acceptance tone
- Replace the handset
- On picking up your handset you will hear an interrupted tone indicating the forwarding is active
To cancel forwarding
- Lift your handset and you will hear the forwarding tone
- Press ##9 and you will hear an acceptance tone
- Replace the handset
